Forthcoming change: In 2024, His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) will introduce a new video hearings service (VHS) designed specifically for court hearings. The new VHS will provide virtual meeting rooms without the need to switch to another platform, secure and private meeting rooms for judicial office holders, on-demand technical support from trained teams to assist participants before and during hearings and simultaneous interpretation. As part of the government’s response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a number of temporary changes were made to the way in which hearings and trials in the criminal courts in England and Wales were conducted during the pandemic. The most significant change was the expansion of the use of live video links and live audio links to enable defendants, witnesses and others to participate in a wider range of criminal hearings.
