18  Initial procedure on information against adult for offence triable either way

(1)ÌýÌýÌýÌý Sections 19 to 23 below shall have effect where a person who has attained [the age of 18 years] appears or is brought before a magistrates' court on an information charging him with an offence triable either way [²¹²Ô»å—

(a)ÌýÌýÌýÌý he indicates under section 17A above that (if the offence were to proceed to trial) he would plead not guilty, or

(b)ÌýÌýÌýÌý his representative indicates under section 17B above that (if the offence were to proceed to trial) he would plead not guilty.]

[(1)ÌýÌýÌýÌý A magistrates' court must proceed by way of a hearing in accordance with such of sections 19 to 22 as are applicable where—

(a)ÌýÌýÌýÌý a person before the court as mentioned in section 17A(1)—

(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý indicates under that section that (if the offence in question were to proceed to trial) the person would plead not guilty, and

(ii)ÌýÌýÌýÌý does not give an in-court indication of non-consent to summary trial (see section 17BA(6));

(b)ÌýÌýÌýÌý the legal representative of a person who has been before the court as mentioned in section 17A(1)—

(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý indicates under
