False instrument definition

What does False instrument mean?

The forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981 (fca 1981) creates various offence concerning false instruments.

FCA 1981, s 8 defines 'instrument' to include, among others, a number of commercial documents, cheque and other cards, and certified copies of entries in public registers such a register of births and certificates relating thereto. FCA 1981, s 9 prescribes when an instrument is 'false' for the purposes of the FCA 1981, with the governing notion that the document must not only tell a lie, it must tell a lie about itself.
