Eurozone definition

What does Eurozone mean?

Economic and monetary union of the EU member States that have adopted the euro as their common currency.

Officially named euro area, the eurozone has currently 17 members (Latvia will become its 18th member from 1 January 2014). Sharing a single currency means that the euro area countries must coordinate their economic and fiscal policies much more closely than the other EU Member States. The Stability and Growth Pact governing fiscal discipline in the EU has stricter enforcement mechanisms for the eurozone.
