Equal sharing principle definition

What does Equal sharing principle mean?

That matrimonial assets should be shared in equal proportions unless there is good reason to depart from equality.

This principle was established in the House of Lords decision in White v White [2001] 1 All ER 1, [2001] 1 AC 596. In Charman v Charman [2007] EWCA Civ 503, (2007) 1 FCR 1246 it was stated that the equal sharing principle applies to all of the parties' property but to the extent that it is non matrimonial there is a better reason to depart from equality.
