What does VAT return mean?

A VAT Return is a form that is used to report the amount of VAT that has been charged and paid by a business during a particular period. The form is submitted to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on a monthly or quarterly basis. The VAT Return includes details of the amount of VAT charged on sales and the amount of VAT paid on purchases. Businesses that are registered for VAT must submit a VAT Return even if there is no VAT to pay or reclaim.
